Adam Pearson, Carver Adam Pearson is a Maine Nautical and Marine Woodcarver. A local Wells guy, he was born in Maine and began his carving career at age eleven. He also is a part-time lobsterman and works full time at Navtronics, the industry leader for marine electronics system design, sales, and installation on the East Coast. Carver Adam Pearson's passion for the sea, all things marine and nautical, and wood carving is reflected in the beautiful details of his unique marine and nautical signs. Adam visualizes his creation and begins to carve. There are no two carvings alike. From his Well's Maine workshop, each sign is cut from raw wood, carved, painted and protected for many years from Maine's outdoor exposure.

The craft of painting and carving wood reached the peak of its popularity during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as foreign ports of call gave sailors a rich place to bargain for local crafts: wood carvings being a particular speciality. A sailor's life was both arduous and perilous, and yet there were periods of downtime during which sailors turned to wood carving, ropework, scrimshaw. To relieve the tedium of most voyages, the sailors used the jack-knives they carried to whittle. Sailors carved whale bone to pass the time and for trade goods with natives. The ship figurehead carved on the ships they sailed gave good luck and and a unique appearance so other ships could identify them. Many so called Jack Tars were the work of woodcarvers who specialized in carving ship's figureheads. Wood carved figures were especially popular with nautical equipment suppliers, outfitters, instrument makers, and sail makers. They all used carved figures to promote their wares to the crews of various ships in port. Some of these figures were carved by the sailors themselves.
